What to look for in a design and hosting company

There is a variety of things that you should look for when choosing someone to design or you’re your web site. We will try to make it as easy as possible.

Hosting

When you start to look for web site hosting, you should look at the amount of web space offered. Many of the companies that host web sites may not tell you that everything, (including your email resides on the server), counts as the amount of space which is allocated to your server storage space. Be aware that it and the traffic logs normally count as part of the server space.

  1. Look at web space offered, the bandwidth offered, and the extra features. If you see an ad for a huge amount of web space that seems unusually low ("$1.99 a month!"), check it out carefully. It will fall short in at least one of those areas. If an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is. How can they offer tons of services with top quality customer support for such a low support? Truth is, they can't!
  2. Get more web space than you need. Though you may believe 20 megabytes will be more than enough for your small site, you will be surprised how quickly it begins to fill up.
  3. Beware of unlimited bandwidth. There is no such thing. Choose a provider who sets a realistic bandwidth allocation.
  4. Don't buy your web space from an ISP. This is the only tip we can offer you as a hard and fast rule. Companies whose main purpose is selling Internet access are seldom the best at selling web space. They also overcharge notoriously, often double the industry standard.
  5. Don't buy web space from a company that sells web space to porn sites or illegal sites. Those type of websites are system hogs, often with thousands of users at once all downloading images. If you share a virtual server with sites like that, your site will also suffer from system slowdown, i.e. your site will load slower. Look for a disclaimer on the site that says who they won't supply web space to.
  6. Check out the companies downtime or outages. If the company reports outages of more than 1-3 hours a month and during peak times, then move to the next company.
  7. If you pick a hosting company only, you will need to find someone to design the site for you. (Unless you have the time to design it yourself).
  8. Make sure you will have the ability to run CGI scripts. Even if you don't know what that means right now, we promise sometime soon after you get into designing your website, you will find a need to run CGI scripts. Ditto for other extras like secure server access, etc.
  9. Your hosting provider should always be responsible for problems that occur on your web site that are not caused by you. In other words, if the server crashes, you should not have to worry about it nor should you have to pay to have it fixed. If your provider is asking for something like that, then it is probably time to move to a new provider.

Design

  1. The design of the site is the most important step and should not be taken lightly. A poorly designed website will most likely not help you achieve your goals.
  2. If you are purchasing a new domain name, make sure you are listed as the Registrant/Legal Owner and the billing contact. We run into instances when new clients were surprised to find out that they don't own their domain name as they thought; rather the company that first registered the site listed themselves as the Registrant/Legal Owner.
  3. Find out if you can contact some of their customers or if they have references. A companies clients will either boast about the service or they will tell you what is wrong. You should always check out the reputation of the company before you house your web site with them.
  4. Ask question and evaluate your responses. If they don't answer your pre-sales questions then they will most likely not answer your support questions should you become a client.
We have posted some of the most frequently asked questions (FAQ) that have been asked by our current customers. If you are thinking about a web site, than you should probably think about asking these questions to your potential designer/hosting companies.
